Africa

Last year, in our old co-op, I taught World Geography to 4 kiddos, 2 of which were my girls. One of my goals was for each student to memorize the countries of a major continent to the extent that they could look at a blank map of it and be able to name each country by shape and location only. Hannah and Emma chose to learn Africa. It took about several months of study until they both had it down. I was so thrilled and proud of them!

Fast forward to this school year with all the kids in Classical Conversations. It's been a wonderful fit for us and we are enjoying the rigor, fun, and new friendships greatly. Each week, kids in the Foundations classes have presentations, and this particular week's theme was "anything geographical". Emma decided to recite the 50 countries of Africa that she had memorized (and had to brush up on a bit), as well as some facts about Sudan.

I recorded it with my dinosaur camera, so the quality is pretty bad. She's using a blank map of Africa and naming each country from memory.
